I Do, You Watch
Personal confession from a middle aged man…I love Disney World! Both of my brothers have only been once or twice and both hate it…along with most other grown men that I know. I like to think one of the main reasons is that I love trying to scheme a way to beat the system every single day in each park. Several years ago, friends of ours said they wanted to go to Disney World with us, but there was one catch. They wanted me to be the guide. Basically they said they wanted to follow me and my family with everything we do at each park. My friend said, “I just don’t want to go and stand around or try to figure out what to do next. I want someone that knows to show us how to maximize it”. I’m not sure I was the best guide considering I kept them in Magic Kingdom until 3 am so we could get to our 30th ride. You get what you get. But a great guide is beneficial in so many ways.
In Mark 3:14, we read that Jesus appointed the twelve disciples “that they might be with Him.” Like a good guide, Jesus demonstrated ministry to the disciples before sending them out. He let them watch Him teach, preach, heal, and serve. Through spending time together, the disciples could observe and learn by Jesus’ example. As they accompanied Jesus on His travels, He coached them along the way like a guide pointing to the next Disney ride. Before we can expect someone to imitate our example, we need to let them watch us closely. We need to take time to demonstrate and explain the “how” behind the “what” we’re asking them to do. Learning leadership happens best in the context of relationship.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
