Week 2 |IN – Loving People More

Listen instead of reading

Take a Moment

Ask God what He wants to show you before reading today

Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.(Colossians 3:14)

If so much of following Jesus is learning to trust God, rely on His Spirit, and obey Jesus’ command, it’s impossible to do without living in deep relationship with others!

In Colossians chapter 3, it references some New Testament verses known as the “one another commands.” All the marks Paul lists involve relationship with others: “Compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience” are only on display if another person is involved. Forgiveness, “love,” and “perfect harmony” require other people too (often, those toward whom we find it difficult to enact those qualities). We are “one body. And I skipped my favorite “one another command”: “Bearing with one another,” which is also translated as “Be tolerant with one another.” (Col. 3:13). (Even if I cannot fulfill the other commands, surely I can put up with fellow followers of Jesus. . . most of the time at least!)

Colossians highlights the interconnectedness between the love of God and the love of our neighbors as ourselves. These are two sides of one coin; they reflect Jesus’ new command given to us.  This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. (John 15:12).  We display how we have been loved primarily through our love of others.  (Sadly, even some of the most educated people I know who claim to follow Jesus seem to try to work harder so God will love them or they display a lack of love for others.)  What does this love look like? It looks like loving people, created in God’s image, with the selfless, sacrificial love of Christ. It looks like living the “one another commands” by the power of God’s Spirit.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
