“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. (Luke 10:33)

I have been trying to fix a portable (and inflatable) hot tub at my house…what can I say, the Carpenters are classy people.  One of the biggest issues with the project is that I don’t know how to fix anything.  I ended up making about 6 different trips to Lowes.  On my last trip, my wife said she’d ride over with me. I wasn’t too happy (or running hot as she calls it) lol.  However, outside it was really cold.  As I was walking in, I noticed an older couple trying to fit three large boxes in their trunk.  Fortunately, my wife was much calmer and said, “you should offer to help them put those in their car”.  I was sure that two 85 year olds with walkers had it under control or maybe I just wasn’t feeling the whole good samaritan vibe.  Either way, I knew she was right so I offered my help.  They were truly grateful and the older lady said after they were loaded, “my husband won’t ask for help, but there was no way we were lifting those”.

Most of us see others, but I wonder how often we really see others?  Imagine walking through your day with blinders on, focused on your to-do list, when suddenly, an unexpected opportunity for kindness appears. It’s the person struggling to carry their groceries, the neighbor who looks overwhelmed, or a friend who texts about a rough day. Life is full of these moments, waiting for us to notice and act.

The Good Samaritan didn’t plan to stumble upon someone in need, yet his response set a precedent for how we’re called to love. This parable challenges us to see beyond our schedules and biases, inviting us to love our neighbors—especially those who are different from us or whom we might not usually notice. Let’s be intentional about recognizing and acting on the unexpected opportunities to show kindness that cross our paths every day.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
