But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.(1 John 4:8)
What if someone asked you to define God in only one word. What would you say? I think our answer to that tells us so much about our own image of God. God is…Angry? Holy? Scary?
Want to hear three words that would have sounded wild to the religious crowd of the first century? Here goes—God is love. Read the myths and legends about Zeus and Apollo and Aphrodite, and you’ll realize that a God of love was crazier than a Hallmark movie with a zombie-infested ending! The ancient Greeks even had a phrase, “The gods play while the people pay”.
But this was the claim that swept through the ancient Greek world when Christians like John preached: “God is love” (1 John 4:8). Can you imagine hearing that for the first time? I bet that news sounded so strange and so good.
It did for me. It was March, 1992 in a little country church where I realized for the first time that God wasn’t out to get me but actually loved me. I heard something new—God is love. That thought rocked my world. .
If that idea seems new to you too, I encourage you to continue following the Chasing Epic Challenge. One of the best reasons to spend time in the Bible is to be reminded of God’s crazy love for you. But even if it’s something you’ve known since you were a kid, pause today and consider how different life would be if God was not love. Then thank the God who loves to define himself with a short, simple, stunning sentence—God is love.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
