God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
As a parent, I was thinking about some of my favorite gifts from my kids throughout the years. My son once signed his first Little League home run ball “to the best dad ever” and said he wanted me to have it on Father’s Day. Another time, he made me a DVD of a guy’s sermon because he overheard me tell Johnda that I liked listening to him. My daughter on the other hand truly loves to give gifts. Even when she was really little, she would spend hours perfecting the perfect gift for us. Just this past year, she made me this amazing puzzle picture of when her and my son were both baptized.
I also think receiving gifts is her love language. It’s fun to get gifts for someone that also loves receiving them. Every Christmas, to see how much she loves gifts, makes me love giving gifts even more (well, I love my wife getting gifts even more lol)! Imagine though if we gave our kids a gift, and instead of being excited, they looked at us and asked how much they owed us. It’d be devastating.
I think sometimes we don’t realize that’s us every time we try to repay God. Every time we try to earn His love. It’s freely given as a gift and we have that because of Jesus. And being joyful and thankful about that gift is what God wants from us most! Do you believe that? Why do you think it’s hard for us to sometimes trust what Jesus did was a gift? How can you be more thankful for that gift today?
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
