“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” (Titus 2:11-12)
The 60’s band the Beatles came onto the scene in America and exploded. The true definition of an overnight success. Or were they? I read a story that documented their early start and insane hours playing for a handful of people in bars in Europe for basically nothing. Here was the grueling schedule without a day off for years. The group worked 10 hours a day on weeknights, 12 hours on Saturdays, and eight hours on Sundays. Add three hours a day for practicing and deciding how they needed to improve their act, and you get a total of about 90 hours a week. Sadly most people take a detour on their road because it’s just not that exciting most days.
The temptation of immediate pleasure and excitement has derailed many from their intended destination. In the moment, giving in to what feels good seems harmless. It’s hard to connect how one choice could send your life in a damaging direction. This is true in all areas, but especially our moral and spiritual lives. The path that promises thrills right now – immorality, dishonesty, impurity, greed – often obscures where it ultimately ends. It’s so key that we learn to think beyond the moment of temptation to consider the long-term destination of pursuing that desire.
I’ve had many single friends justify whatever they were doing by saying, “Once I’m married, I’ll change.” But in reality, that path only takes you further from relational and spiritual health. I’ve known others who thought it was no big deal to fudge their taxes, steal from work, or gossip about others here and there. But little by little, those patterns eroded their integrity.
Here’s the bottom line. The road that will take you where you ultimately want to go will not be nearly as shiny or glamorous as the road that can ruin you. You do get to choose your road, just remember it’s never an event but an actual path your life is moving towards.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
