So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it. (Hebrews 2:1)

My phone rang at 10:22 pm. Not super late for me or some of you, but most calls after nine I’ve learned are not good. The lady on the other end of the line was frantic. Trying to decipher her words through the hysteria, I realized that her husband was leaving her and wanted to take the kids. It sounded really bad and I was young and had no clue how such a disaster could come out of nowhere. After meeting (that night by the way because it was an emergency), I realized one had been caught cheating.  But the most surprising thing was none of this happened just that night. It had been building for over a year with two people both going down the wrong road.

Disaster rarely happens overnight. Most of the time, we don’t suddenly wake up in a mess. More often, small compromises made consistently over time lead to patterns and habits that gradually direct us down the wrong path. It can start with one mistake, one choice to ignore wise advice, or one moment of impulsivity. But then it happens again. And again. And before we realize it, we have drifted far from where we once intended to be.
I think of friendships that suddenly dissolve overnight. In reality, hurtful words, lack of effort, and choosing other priorities usually happen long before that. Or what about faith? Many who are far from God today made small choices to compromise their convictions, slowly numbing their spiritual hunger.

We all are on a daily path in every area that will take us somewhere specific. Pay attention to the small fork-in-the-road decisions that compose your path. It’s crucial to evaluate your direction often and course correct when needed. Don’t wait until you’ve veered way off track. Watch for the early warning signs when your path starts to drift from your intentions. It’s not even a bad idea to get in the habit (maybe even some weekly power ups from the app) of asking God’s Spirit to help with guidance. He promises to do that when you start to stray. The good news is, it’s not too late to get back on the right path when you’ve wandered. But it’s much harder the further you’ve gone astray. Check your trajectory today. How can you align your daily steps with the ultimate destination you desire?

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
