“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)

My girlfriend had just broken up with me and I couldn’t believe it. Granted, like we said before…everyone else around me was probably more surprised that I couldn’t believe it since all of them definitely saw it coming. I remember my dad was working on a car and asked me to hand him something. Like most people my age in their forties, parents didn’t get involved in our lives much back then compared to how it is now. I had never heard him comment on any girls I had ever dated. As I handed him a wrench under the car, he said, “I hear you and so and so broke up” I said yeah and he just said almost under his breath, “probably not a bad thing.” As simple as it was, I remember thinking “what does he know or see that I don’t?” Fast forward a few years later and I was leaving the house to ask my wife to marry me and he knew. As I walked out the door, he said, “she can do better”. He is much wiser than I ever gave him credit for.

We all need people in our lives who love us enough to warn us when we are headed down the wrong path, even when it’s uncomfortable. Unfortunately, our tendency is often to ignore, minimize, or even resent that kind of input. “They just don’t understand my situation,” we think. In reality, those close to us often see with more clarity where our decisions are leading. They have the advantage of objectivity that we lack. But the road we’re on seems perfectly justified in the moment.

One key aspect of the Epic Life Roadmap is that you need a tribe. I can promise you from experience that it will not happen overnight but on the right road, you’ll start getting others to see some blind spots that you can’t see. Who in your life has tried to wave a flag of caution over your recent decisions? What nuggets of wisdom have you dismissed or justified away? As awkward as it is, humbly considering outside input could spare you much pain and regret. Pray and ask God to help you see any blind spots you have. Lean into godly community, counsel, and accountability. Give special weight to warnings from those who know you best and want God’s best for you. It’s pride that responds defensively. Humility heeds wisdom to stay on the right path.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
