“The wise see danger and take refuge.” (Proverbs 27:12)
“I can’t believe he broke up with me?” We’ve all heard it and thought the same thing. How can you not believe it? He’s been breaking up with you for about 3 months, you’re just the only one not seeing it.
Every now and then, we catch ourselves saying “I should have seen this coming”. However, I have noticed I’m way better at thinking for others, “Come on, you seriously had to have seen this coming?” I told a couple once that I didn’t feel like they should get married. She had just lost her husband fairly recently and he was coming out of an ugly divorce. I was polite and gracious and just briefly explained why wisdom might suggest waiting a little longer. Turns out that was not only fighting words, but enough for them to write me off for life. That is until the honeymoon phase of their new marriage wore off and they wanted to know if I would counsel them. Maybe one of my best life moments to get to say, “I told you so” but I held back. Turns out that my path and your path is pretty predictable for those close to us.
The good news is that path predictability is what also frees us and frames the future. While we can’t control everything, we can trust that our path and daily choices set the trajectory of our lives to a great degree. Our direction today predicts our destination tomorrow. This roadmap principle grants comfort and responsibility. We are free from the burden of having to micromanage every detail. And we have clear power to set the course of our lives through decisions we make each day.
You get to write the next chapter. If you’re headed somewhere you don’t want to be, take heart that your story is not set in stone. With God’s help, you have power to make course corrections that will change your trajectory. Part of your Epic Life is avoiding as many “I should have seen that coming” moments as possible.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
