Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour? (Matthew 26:40)
There are some very practical steps to building a life connected with God and His love. When I first started following Jesus as a teenager, I didn’t know how to spend time with God. I couldn’t see Him or feel Him, and no one gave me a manual to help me read or build a prayer life. I had actually never seen a normal person pray in my life. I saw priests and preachers on tv look like they were praying, but they were special. They were holy in my mind, and I was a dumb teenager who thought about girls, chewing snuff and football.
Who taught you how to pray? How did you learn? Or do you feel the same way?
The Bible tells us of a difficult season in the life of Jesus. “Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?’ he asked Peter.” When I read this verse, my immediate answer was absolutely not. How could spending an hour in prayer be possible when spending five mintues seems like an eternity? I also wondered some other things with prayer. What would I do? What would I say? How could I hear God answer me? I had more questions and frustrations about prayer than any other spiritual issue. Maybe you can relate.
Over time, I’ve learned some things to consistently spend more time with God through prayer and the Bible. No one taught me how to create these times with God. I learned through trial and error. I’m hoping these tips will help you build something pretty incredible in realizing that God loves you more than you can imagine.
Before ending today, I also want to give you one phrase that I have shared with my kids many times.
“Easy to do, Easy not to do”
When I first heard that, I thought it was genius. Why? Because so many things in my life are good for me and are actually easy to do. However, most things that are easy to do, are also easy “not” to do. We overlook them because when we don’t do them, the world doesn’t fall apart or worse, nothing changes. However, a month or year of doing them (or not doing them) has a profound effect on your everyday lives. Time with God is easy to do, but it’s also easy not to do.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
