When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, “Would you like to get well?”(John 5:6)
Several years back when we were first married, my wife was complaining about someone at her work and telling me everything that happened. Immediately, I started thinking about contacting this person and then my next step. When I gave her my really organized plan, do you know what she said? “I don’t need you to fix it, I just wanted to complain to you for a second” Sometimes it’s probably healthy for all of us to have someone to share something with, just to get it off our chest. However, on more serious wounds, I think we need to ask that question a little more honestly. Do You Want To Be Healed?
In John 5 we read that before Jesus healed the man at the pool of Bethesda, He asked him, “Do you want to get well?” What a strange question to ask of a man who had been sick for 38 years! The first step to facilitate healing of emotional wounds is to check if you really want to be healed. There are many people today who do not want to be healed. They do not want to be helped out of their weakness. They love their weakness, their helplessness, because they crave the attention of others through their helplessness. They do not want to assume responsibility for their own lives.
But like many of us, I think past this man’s excuses or blame, wanted to be healed, because he says “Yes, I want to be healed, but I cannot. I’ve tried. I’ve done everything I know how, but I lack the ability. I’ve no one to help me. I’ve given up. I have no hope.” You could be like that. You may have given up on your situation, refusing to believe there is any hope. Your hurt is too deep. You may be saying “I will never be healed.” Respond to Jesus’ question and tell Him “I want to be healed.” Let’s keep the quote theme rolling with one from Sharon Jaynes: “Satan wants to use our past to paralyze us. God wants to use our past to propel us. The choice is ours.”
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
