If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. (Matthew 5:41)

During high school football summer workouts, we had to do a timed “mile” every Monday.  It was always after you had lifted weights for over an hour or so and the heat on the track felt like Death Valley.  I saw several teammates groan, some complain and some (the skinny guys) seem almost unfazed by the challenge.  But do you know one thing I never saw in my playing days or as a coach?  For a kid to decide to go ahead and run a second mile right after.  Now imagine after running that mile, you decided on your own to keep going and run two miles! While it might not be the most fun experience, it’s definitely going above and beyond what you were asked to do in the first place!

When it comes to serving others, that’s what Jesus calls us to do: to go above and beyond! To not just do what we have to do but to do something we don’t have to do as a way to serve or help someone else. When we choose to serve someone else by doing that, other people can see God at work in us.

So my challenge for you today is to look for a way to go above and beyond what you are asked to do. Whether at home, at school, work or on your team, find a way to go the extra mile to serve someone else!

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
