Week 1 | It’s All In Your Head

I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. (Philippians 4:12)

This is a little embarrassing, but as a kid, I constantly had batteries and toy motors in my pockets.  I loved to take apart electrical things, see how they were wired and then rewire them to make something new.  My parents used to play cards with a few other couples on the weekend and one of the guys always called me “battery boy”.  Actually, I went to see him one Sunday a few years back after C3 because he wasn’t doing well.  For some reason I had changed batteries in a microphone on stage and put the old ones in my pocket without thinking about it.  He was so happy when his first question was “if I had any batteries in my pocket” and to his surprise I pulled out two AA’s.  He lost it lol.

The second tool for changing your thinking is the Rewire Principle: Rewire your brain, renew your mind. It’s not just Biblical either, it’s creating a new neural pathway for your brain.  What new neural pathway do you need to create? That depends on your old pathway, right?   After you start realizing the lies (look back at yesterday’s devo) you are telling yourself, you now need to start replacing them (rewiring) with God’s truth.  What does this really look like?  It’s reminding ourselves of some basic gospel truths about God.  Here’s the Big 4 that I try to continuously rewire my brain from lies with truth:

God is great — so we do not have to be in control.
God uses everything that happens to work out his good in our lives (Romans 8:26-39). We can relax and rest in that truth and his care.

God is glorious — so we do not have to fear others.
Worrying about what other people will think is crippling. God says, “fear of man will prove to be a snare” (Proverbs 29:25). When we recognize God as the glorious One and live for his approval, we can relax.

God is good — so we do not have to look elsewhere.
The Psalmist reminds us, “in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Psalm 16:11). We get into trouble when we think something or someone other than God is going to satisfy us. It won’t. Jesus is enough.

God is gracious — so we don’t have to prove ourselves.
Why do we feel like we have to win the approval of others? We don’t. If Jesus has made us acceptable before God (and he has), what’s left to prove? Who do we need to impress?

That’s good news!

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
