Life is full of unexpected challenges, and how we approach these challenges often determines the outcome. Too often, we let our default mindset—one that might be shaped by past failures or negative experiences—dictate how we view a situation. But what if we chose to frame our perspective before the challenge even arrives? This concept is known as “pre-framing,” and it’s a powerful tool for transforming how we experience life. Pre-framing is about choosing your perspective in advance. Instead of letting your automatic, often negative, thoughts take over, you consciously decide how you will view the situation. By doing this, you set yourself up to see opportunities instead of obstacles, to focus on God’s faithfulness instead of your fears.
Think about it: How often do we enter a situation already expecting the worst? We carry the weight of past disappointments and let it cloud our view of the present. But when we pre-frame, we actively decide to trust in God’s goodness before the situation unfolds. We remind ourselves that God is with us, that He is for us, and that He has equipped us to handle whatever comes our way. For instance, in leadership or spiritual situations where the stakes are high, instead of shrinking back in fear, we can tell ourselves, “I am prepared for this. God has brought me to this moment, and He will guide me through it.” By choosing this frame ahead of time, we can walk into challenges with confidence, knowing that we are not alone. It’s not about ignoring the reality of a situation or pretending that everything is fine when it’s not. Instead, it’s about controlling the narrative in your mind, focusing on the truth of God’s promises rather than the lies of past experiences or negative labels.
Before your next big meeting, difficult conversation, or challenging task, take a moment to pre-frame your thoughts. Choose to see it through the lens of faith, not fear. Tell yourself, “God is with me. He will help me succeed.” By doing this, you’ll find that you’re not only more resilient in tough situations, but you’re also more open to the possibilities that God has in store.
