I spoke at a celebration of life for a great friend of mine this week. One of the most impactful moments for me wasn’t anything that happened during the service. It was the conversations with so many different people that shared how this person had encouraged them or helped them in some small way. However, all of these “small things” were actually quite big. One guy was telling me a story right before I walked up to speak. He said that when he was a kid, he remembers this guy dropping off money to his dad at his house because he wanted to help. They were getting ready to shut their electricity off that week.
It was years later when he actually got the opportunity to thank him for that moment. When he mentioned it, he didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. He then said something that was so profound, “I think he helped so many people, that he really doesn’t remember most of it” It was that common for him. Wow! I prayed that day, that hopefully one day when my time is up that people could say, “he helped and encouraged so many people that he can’t even keep track or remember it”. We believe everyone is designed to make a difference in the lives of those around them. Have you ever thought about the legacy you will leave once you are gone? Something of value that you will hand down to the generations below you? The Bible describes the church as a body; something that has many members who all function in specific and unique ways. Paul makes it clear in 1 Corinthians 12 that despite what we view as valuable in the body, all members play a unique and vital role. God not only wants to use us as individuals but the church as a whole.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
