15 I will tell everyone about your righteousness. All day long I will proclaim your saving power, though I am not skilled with words.16 I will praise your mighty deeds, O Sovereign Lord. I will tell everyone that you alone are just. (Psalm 71:15-16)
Devotional by Alisha Miller
My daughter has taken interest in 4H over the past couple of years , and we recently spent a week at the Boyd County Fair. The Saturday before the fair starts they have a Pre-Fair Show. Aubrey has participated in this show for 3 years now, but for some reason that day she was just not herself. She seemed unsure and nervous when she was speaking to the judges about her animals. I could see the disappointment on her face when Grand Champion names were called in her classes, and it wasn’t hers. At the end of the show I asked her what was wrong? She was upset and angry at herself, so she lashed out at me. “I’m not like you mom…I’m not good at talking in front of people. I don’t understand why I freeze up, and get so nervous. It’s not fair…I wish I was more like you!” My heart was crushed for her, and there was nothing I could do other than tell her a part of my story. I explained to her how many times in my life my nerves got the best of me, and I didn’t do as well as I hoped. That many times things didn’t turn out the way I wanted, even when I worked really hard for it. She said “How do you do it then? How do you talk in front of all those people, and not seem scared?” I let her in on my secret…”I do get nervous, but I ask Jesus to give me words.” She said “That’s it? You ask Jesus for words?” I believe she just rolled her eyes, and walked away. She thought that I had given her the most useless piece of advice that she’d ever heard.
Fast forward to the following Tuesday, and I could tell she was nervous most of the day. It was show time, and she entered the ring with her class. It was like watching a different kid out there. She took home multiple Grand Champion Titles that day. After the show she came to me all smiles, and said “Mom I did what you do. I asked Jesus to give me words, and He took it from there.” It wasn’t the trophy or title that day that meant something to her. The simple story I told her was like giving her a super power. It gave her the ability to find confidence and peace in Jesus, and to give him all the glory in everything she does.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
