“Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.” (Luke 10:33)
Devotional by Aaron Fields
Have you ever noticed how some of the worst moments in life can lead to the most powerful stories? The Good Samaritan is a great example of this. Think about who this Samaritan was. During that time, Samaritans and Jewish people didn’t get along, like at all. They hated each other. It would have been easy for the Samaritan to pass by, especially knowing the pain his own people may have faced at the hands of others. There’s a chance he might have even remembered moments from his childhood when his own family was attacked, and no one from the Jewish community came to help—maybe they even celebrated their suffering.
But instead of letting anger or bitterness take over, this Samaritan chose compassion. He knew the pain too well and decided to make a different choice. The worst scenes in his past led him to create a story of mercy and love. Don’t miss this. Sometimes, the moments that seem the most painful or unfair can shape us into people who bring hope and kindness to others. Even when it feels difficult, we can ask God to help us choose compassion over bitterness.
As you go through this week, think about where you might be able to turn a difficult moment into a story of love and kindness. Who knows? God may use your story to make a difference in someone else’s life.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
