Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and prayed, “Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? (2 Samuel 7:18)

“Not to brag or anything, but I’m pretty humble”.   I was joking with a few people at work a few months back and made that comment.   They laughed and then Aaron said, “I’ve never heard anyone try to be humble and sound not humble at all”.   However, many people have the wrong idea about God, the Bible, and humility.

Acting with humility does not mean groveling in front of others or thinking other people are superior to us.  That’s not what the Bible says. God says when you are humble, you are free from pride and arrogance. You don’t need to defend yourself when you understand what the Bible says about humility, for you know who you are in Jesus.  Think about what God the Father said about His Son before He even started His ministry.  “This is my Son that pleases Me”.  Wait, but He hadn’t done anything yet?  Jesus had freedom because He knew all things come by the Father and didn’t have to perform for approval. The enemy can even flip it with the tactic by getting us to think: “My hard work has brought me all my success.”

David gives us a good mindset for humility when he said, “God, you have brought me this far”.

The perspective we need is from two quotes I love:

“A great man is always willing to be little.”― Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” ― C.S. Lewis

That makes sense, right?  We’ll come back to this idea tomorrow.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
