“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8)
Several years back, we went on a beach trip with my family. My parents rode with us and we decided we’d drive through the night while the kids (and my wife) slept. I was driving and bragging to my dad about this new GPS map system from my iphone. I had it synced to our destination and it would keep telling me where to turn, etc. He was impressed until about three am in the morning when my phone lost service and started recalculating. We were in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and off any main highway. Part of the reason was that I had told him about two hours earlier that it gives you routes that aren’t on maps so you can save time. It hit me on this two lane road that I was lost and my phone hadn’t been giving me directions for quite some time. It became really frustrating when my dad said, “this sign says we are going north”. I’m not a genius but I know we should probably not being north from Ohio to North Carolina. I also didn’t appreciate him humming dueling banjos either, but that’s another story. The panic set in and I started thinking to myself—”I’ve wasted so much time! How could I mess up like this?” Then we got back into cell service and GPS has an amazing little feature: rerouting. It calmly said, “Take the next exit,” giving us a new path, no judgment, no scolding.
That’s how God’s grace works. You might have taken wrong turns in life—made bad decisions, carried guilt over things you can’t change—but grace is the voice of the GPS, calmly telling you there’s a new path ahead. You’re not stuck in your guilt. Grace allows you to reroute and move forward in freedom, no matter how far off course you think you’ve gone. What guilt do you need to let go of today? What would your life look like if you embraced the freedom that comes with grace?
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
