“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Anyone love garage sales? My wife and I only had one garage sale almost 20 years ago when we lived in South Point.  Several people would come up and say they liked something but didn’t have the money to buy it, so I would hear my wife reply, “just take it”.  It must have caught on because within a few hours, everything we had set out was gone.  Total money made: $14.12.  Needless to say, we have never had one since.  We just lose too much money.

I recently read a story from the greatest garage sale of all-time.  A commercial painter named Rick Norsigian purchased in 2002 a set of glass plates that had images of Yosemite National Park printed on them. He was attracted to the composition of the photos and paid $45 to take them home. It wasn’t long after that he found out that the glass plates were the work of famed photographer, Ansel Adams. At first, Norsigian sold some prints for only $7,500 until he found out later that the discovery was worth much more… over $200 million!

You’ve never been that lucky, but think about the time you went to a garage sale and found a treasure: an old, dusty baseball glove or vintage record you couldn’t believe was being sold for pennies. Or made a deal where you were definitely coming out ahead.  You eagerly hand over your change, knowing that what you’re getting is worth far more than the few coins you exchanged. That’s the great exchange God offers us through Jesus. We give Him our guilt—our past mistakes, failures, sins—and He hands us grace in return. It’s an exchange that seems impossible: how could we give so little and receive so much? But that’s what grace is—it’s not fair, and it’s not about what we deserve. It’s about what Jesus did for us on the cross, giving us what we could never earn.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
