“Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.” (Matthew 5:37)
Post by Aaron Fields
There was a man that I attended church with when I was a youth pastor in Ironton. I loved the dude! He always helped take up our “offering” every Sunday morning, and was always eager to do the prayer before they passed the plates around. The prayers were usually kind of long and drawn out, but they were definitely not your average “get it over with” prayer. It was pretty thought out and rehearsed. They were a bit odd at the least.
Once he came up to me and asked, “What did you think of that prayer?”. I had no idea what to say other than, “Great! Good job!”. It seemed so strange to me that he was so proud of how he talked to God in front of everyone. But, don’t we all do that with our words sometimes? We think if we say what we want in a big, long, drawn out prayer that it is somehow better than someone else who says practically the same thing. Say it big loud and proud and show everyone you mean business!
Jesus cuts through all of that in His teaching. He tells us to say less and mean more. It’s not about how fancy our vows sound or how many promises we make—what matters is the integrity behind our words. When our “yes” is backed by integrity, it carries more weight than a thousand empty promises. And when our “no” is honest, it reflects a heart anchored in truth. God doesn’t need us to dress up our words. He’s not impressed by exaggeration. What He desires is a simple, genuine faithfulness in how we speak and live.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
