The Family Not the Team | Tuesday

Week 4 | Dropping The F(orgiveness) Bomb!

Listen instead of reading

Take a Moment

Ask God what He wants to show you before reading today

Read The Daily

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15)

I used to read a ton of coaching books, articles, etc. in high school and college.  Before Bill Belichick won six Super Bowls, he had an article that detailed his coaching philosophy.  It was interesting because it was so simple for everyone (except him).  He basically believed everything was about the team and had a detailed job description for every person in the organization all the way down to the guys doing the laundry.  Everywhere in the building were signs that said, “Do Your Job”.   Perform and do the things we have asked you to do everyday.

Our world also operates on a performance-based mindset. Whether it’s in work, relationships, or even faith, we can feel as though we’re being measured. Jesus, however, shows us that the Kingdom of God is not a scorecard or a team that ranks us based on performance. Instead, we are invited to be His family. Think about that: Family. When you’re part of a family, your belonging isn’t conditional. No amount of effort can increase your place, nor can failure threaten your relationship.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus challenges the idea that forgiveness, love, or grace can be earned. He extends God’s perfect love and forgiveness to us, not because of what we do, but because of who He is. We said Sunday that God’s Law is conditional, but God’s Love is unconditional.  Jesus is  showing us the power of family love—love that goes beyond the minimum requirements. We are in God’s family and understand we are loved unconditionally, it frees us to love others unconditionally as well.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
