“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law” (Galatians 5:18)

When Johnda and I were first married, we decided we were going to buy a car.  I am not exaggerating when I say it was one of the worst experiences for both of us.  Part of the issue was that we kept getting badgered by the salesman, even though we continuously told him we would like to first look around.  After an hour (it felt like 5 hours) we got back into our car and vowed to never buy a car for the rest of our lives.  I remember my wife saying, “he never listened to one thing we said and he felt like he was going to force us to do what he wanted us to do”.  It’s not a good feeling when you feel like you are being forced to do something.  Fast forward to a few months later and we saw a car for sale by a different dealership.  The salesman said, “look around and if you’d like to test drive anything, just come inside and let me know”.  We ended up buying a car that day.

The law tells us what we must do, while grace invites us to live in freedom. Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount flips our understanding of rules and expectations on its head. He pushes His audience beyond the law’s requirements, challenging them to go above and beyond. And yet, He knows no one can truly fulfill the law—not on their own. When we forgive, love, and serve, it’s not because we have to in order to meet a requirement. It’s because we get to, as those already forgiven and loved. Under grace, we’re empowered to live in God’s way, not out of obligation, but as a joyful response to His goodness. Jesus brings us into a new covenant, where it’s not about how we perform but about embracing His finished work for us. We’re free to live with hearts shaped by gratitude, rather than fear or duty.

The law says: Got To = Get ItI’ve got to forgive so I can be forgiven.  I’ve got to love others so God will love me.  But grace flips it and says: Got It = Get ToBecause I’m so extremely forgiven by God, I am free to forgive others.   Because I’m already loved by God, I can love others the same way.  Because I’ve “Got It”, I “Get To” live it out on a daily basis.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
