As you yield freely and fully to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life. (Galatians 5:16)
Have you ever bought a new phone or computer and tried to transfer some of your old stuff over only to find it doesn’t work like it used to? The self-life is like trying to run outdated apps on a brand-new phone. The apps may have been useful before, but now they freeze, crash, or just don’t work anymore. Before we came to know Christ, the self-life was our go-to operating system. We relied on our own efforts, desires, and plans to feel okay. But no matter how much we updated the apps or forced them to work, they never delivered the peace and fulfillment we were chasing.
Galatians 5:16-17 reminds us that the cravings of the self-life—the constant striving, proving, and self-reliance—are incompatible with our new identity in Christ. When we came to know Him, we were given a new operating system, powered by the Holy Spirit. It’s not about forcing the old apps to work anymore; it’s about letting the Spirit lead us into a better way of living. If our faith is in Jesus, we’re no longer defined by the limitations of the self-life. Imagine getting frustrated that an app keeps crashing, only to realize there’s a better version available that runs perfectly on your new phone. That’s what the Spirit offers—a completely new way to live. Instead of relying on outdated patterns, we can trust Him to guide us into the abundant life Jesus promised (John 10:10). Living by the Spirit doesn’t mean we won’t feel the pull of old habits or ways of thinking. But it does mean we have the power to step beyond them. The Spirit isn’t just a guide; He’s our power source. When we yield to Him, we find true freedom—not through striving, but through trusting.
