When your self-life craves the things that offend the Holy Spirit you hinder him from living free within you! And the Holy Spirit’s intense cravings hinder your self-life from dominating you! So then, the two incompatible and conflicting forces within you are your self-life of the flesh and the new creation life of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:17)

I was recently given medication to help pass a kidney stone.  It had all kinds of warning labels on it and I’m sure like most of you…I ignored it.  Right on the bottle it explicitly said, “Avoid getting up too fast.” Did I listen? Of course not. The result? A spinning room, a bruised head, 3 stitches, a mild concussion and a story I’ll never live down of being made fun of by my friends. Ignoring warning labels usually leads to unnecessary pain.

The self-life—the life where we rely on our own strength, desires, and plans—is like that ignored warning label. It promises quick fixes, pleasure, or control, but it delivers frustration, exhaustion, and pain. Paul’s words in Galatians 5 are clear: the self-life is incompatible with the Spirit-life. When we choose self, we’re choosing to operate in outdated patterns—apps that no longer work on our new operating system in Christ. The Spirit’s way isn’t about trying harder or avoiding every mistake. It’s about yielding, trusting, and allowing Him to guide us. Walking in the Spirit isn’t passive—it’s intentional. But unlike the self-life, it doesn’t leave us bruised and broken. Instead, it brings freedom, peace, and joy.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
