Fruit(Full) Week 2 | Self Life Side Effects

Listen instead of reading

Take a Moment

Ask God what He wants to show you before reading today

Read The Daily

The behavior of the self-life is obvious: Sexual immorality, lustful thoughts, pornography, chasing after things instead of God,  manipulating others,  hatred of those who get in your way, senseless arguments, resentment when others are favored, temper tantrums, angry quarrels, only thinking of yourself, being in love with your own opinions, being envious of the blessings of others, murder, uncontrolled addictions,  wild parties, and all other similar behavior. (Galatians 5:19-21)

After our kids left for college, my wife and I decided to start working out at Planet Fitness. We had a plan to lift some weights then walk each day.  We finished our workouts and hopped on treadmills to start walking for an hour. But just a few minutes into our walk, my wife turned to me and said, “Why are we doing this? We’re not getting anywhere.” That’s what the self-life feels like: running hard, expending energy, but making no real progress.

The self-life comes in two forms: self-indulgence and self-improvement. Self-indulgence chases pleasure—more money, more fun, more stuff. Self-improvement chases performance—being better, achieving more, earning approval. Both promise fulfillment, but both lead to emptiness. The treadmill doesn’t stop, and it never gets you where you want to go. The Spirit offers a better way. Instead of chasing what we think will satisfy us, we’re invited to rest in the sufficiency of what Jesus has already done. He doesn’t ask us to run harder or be better; He asks us to walk with Him. When we do, we find that His presence is more than enough.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
