But the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

We talked about the Self Life last weekend and will start in on the Spirit Life this upcoming Sunday. Growing up I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. She was an extraordinary lady, and you could see Jesus in every aspect of her life. I can remember thinking that she had to be an angel on earth, because she was so sweet and kind, and she was good at everything, she was perfect. She told the best stories, and she was an amazing teacher. So many things that she told me and taught me still hold true in my life today. She could grow the most beautiful garden. I couldn’t wait until spring because it was time to get the seeds in the ground, and in just a few months I knew there would be more fresh fruits and vegetables than I could eat. I’m not sure why, but fresh fruits and vegetables straight from the vine just taste better. So thinking back to the time I spent with my grandmother, she not only had a green thumb to grow good gardens, but she understood what it meant to walk in the spirit.
This is the picture Paul gives us in Galatians 5:22-23 with the Fruit of the Spirit. Just as fruit needs to stay connected to its vine to ripen and grow, we need to stay connected to Jesus. Our love, joy, peace, patience—these aren’t things we can create ourselves. They’re the natural result of staying close to Him, letting His Spirit work in us. When we are rooted in His love, love flows from us effortlessly. Joy doesn’t depend on circumstances; it bubbles up because of His presence. Peace becomes our anchor, even in life’s storms, because we know who holds everything together. Living by the Spirit means letting go of the self-life and its empty promises. It means choosing daily to walk with Jesus, allowing His life to flow through us and produce fruit that nourishes not just us, but everyone around us.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
