“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” (Galatians 6:1)

My son is a quarterback.  An older coach told me once, “you don’t want your kid to be a quarterback, pitcher or goalie because watching games is brutal as a parent.”   He has played since the 1st grade and has had tons of different coaches. They all have dealt with players in different ways.  Many of his coaches would threaten with getting benched after a mistake or throwing an interception.  However, he had one coach that he loved.  Instead of berating him or threatening “bench time” when he made a mistake, the coach would pull him aside and say, “This is a game..relax and have some fun.  Let’s figure out what went wrong so you can make better decisions next time we get the ball on offense.

I picture this is what Paul calls us to in Galatians 6:1. The Spirit-led life calls us to lift others when they fall, not judge or leave them stuck in their failure. Like the coach, God sees beyond our mistakes and calls us to restoration with gentleness. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus didn’t leave us in our sin. He came to lift us out of it, bearing our guilt and shame so that we could walk freely in His grace. When we live in the Spirit, we reflect that same grace to others. We’re not meant to be the coach or worse.. judge and jury, but the hand that helps someone back to their feet. Restoring gently doesn’t mean excusing or ignoring mistakes; it means loving someone enough to walk with them through the hard work of redemption. And as we lift others, we find ourselves lifted too—by the grace that saved us first.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
