“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)
Post by Alisha Miller
Every Tuesday during the school year a handful of volunteers show up to hang out with some elementary school kids for our Kidz Club after school program. We have a snack, do some homework, share a Jesus story, and play some games. When we first started the Kidz Club journey years ago we had no idea what we were doing. Some days we felt like we were herding cats, and just trying to survive for 2 hours. There were times that we literally said “Are we even making a difference for these kids?” Long story short, It was hard.
Fast forward to three years later, and we have built relationships with our Kidz Club kids and our community. We have become an extended family that shares meals together, celebrates birthdays and holidays, and makes memories together. One of our kids tells us every single week that Kidz Club is his favorite place to be in the entire world. His words bring Galatians 6:9 to life for me: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” I realized that the small acts—showing kindness, being present, and making a child feel seen—are what God uses to plant seeds of love in someone’s heart. Just a few examples of these seeds are Emmett high fiving every kid that walks through the door, Abby braiding the girls hair, Cassie asking each one how their day was, Melissa making sure every kid has a full belly before they leave, Trent being a father figure in their lives, and Jo telling each kid she loves them. Plus there are a host of C3 angels that provide food for them every single week.
When we serve others it’s easy to wonder if what we’re doing really matters. But the Spirit reminds us to keep going. Every kind word, every high-five, every moment of attention is part of a harvest that we may not see right away but is worth every effort. Serving others can feel like a small effort, but God uses those moments in ways we can’t imagine. Don’t grow weary—your kindness is planting seeds that will last way longer than your lifetime.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
