“She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” (Matthew 1:23)
In Home Alone, Kevin wishes for his family to disappear, and for a brief moment, he gets exactly what he asked for. At first, Kevin relishes his newfound freedom, living by his own rules. But as challenges arise—burglars threatening his home and the stark loneliness of an empty house—he begins to long for the very thing he pushed away: his family. Kevin’s journey mirrors our tendency to focus on what we think we want now, only to realize later that what we truly want has been with us all along.
Kevin’s story reflects a deeper truth about us and God. Often, we think life would be better if we could control everything and live by our own plans. But in our pursuit of independence, we can miss the bigger picture of God’s presence and purpose in our lives.
The good news of Christmas is that God came before us, planning for our redemption long before we ever recognized our need for Him.
Jesus didn’t come to Earth on a whim; His arrival was God’s intentional act of love, carefully orchestrated to meet humanity’s deepest needs. When Jesus was born, it wasn’t because God needed us—it was because we needed Him. He is Immanuel, “God with us,” stepping into our brokenness to show us a better way. Just as Kevin ultimately realized his family was his greatest treasure, we, too, can discover that God’s presence in our lives is what we truly long for. He knows what we need before we even ask, and He lovingly goes before us to prepare the way.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
