Last week, driving home after picking up my daughter from school, I was caught up in my thoughts about all the things that I still needed to do for work and at home. She was telling me all about her day, and I was only half listening. She quickly caught on that I was out in left field, and said are you even listening to me. I quickly snapped out of it, but I could see the disappointment on her face. The mom guilt set in, and I explained that I should have been listening and asked her to start over. Turns out she had some pretty good middle school tea to share, and it left us both laughing the rest of the way home. Instantly I was reminded  how important it is to pause and be fully present in the moment. Sometimes, the best thing isn’t what’s next—it’s now.

Bo had dreams of fame and recognition, but when faced with the choice to chase his dream or help Mary, he chose to live in the moment. He saw what was most important—serving others. Mary also understood the importance of being present. Instead of focusing on the chaos around her, she treasured the precious moments of Jesus’ birth, choosing to live fully in that holy night.

We don’t have to keep searching for the “next big thing” to find purpose. Peace and joy come when we’re fully present with what God has placed in front of us. Try to slow down today and focus on the people and tasks in front of you. Put away distractions like your phone and spend intentional time with someone you love.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it? 

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
