“But Jesus immediately said to them: ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’” (Matthew 14:27)

Post by Aaron Fields

When I was a youth pastor in Ironton, we would have a lot of group trips to the Sta-Tan public pool. They had a high dive. We were constantly trying to get every teen to jump off of it. I’ll never forget talking a girl into it one time, and she landed right on her back. I’m not exaggerating; it sounded like a shotgun went off! Luckily she survived, but I couldn’t talk anyone else after that to jump off. I have no idea why!

Imagine standing on the edge of a diving board for the first time. You’re excited but terrified. The pool looks inviting, but the leap feels overwhelming. That’s how Peter must have felt when Jesus called him to step out of the boat onto the water. He didn’t know what would happen—he just knew Jesus was there. As we approach a new year, we may feel like Peter on the edge of the boat. The future can seem uncertain, but Jesus is calling us forward. He’s already in the unknown, preparing the way for us. Just as Peter trusted Jesus, we can trust that God goes before us, giving us courage for whatever lies ahead. What step of faith is God calling you to take this year?

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
