đŸ”„ Day 6: Mistakes Don’t Define You—Grace Just Upgraded Your Seat

The Lie: Your mistakes define you.
The Truth Bomb: You are defined by the One who loves you.

Read The Daily:
“For the Lord takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.” – Psalm 149:4

Sometimes we allow our mistakes to play over and over in our minds like a broken record. Each replay adds weight to the shame and guilt we feel, convincing us that our failures are the truest measure of who we are. But God’s love tells a different story.

Let me take you back to over 20 years ago when my wife and I were traveling for what I call our “real honeymoon.” Through a series of unexpected events, we found ourselves bumped to first class on a flight. Now, as someone who had only flown once before (on the way down to the beach 5 days earlier), this was a surreal experience. Plush seats, endless snacks, and a level of comfort I certainly didn’t feel I deserved. Sitting there, I remember thinking, I don’t belong here. But the reality was, I was there not because of anything I had done to earn it but because someone had decided to give me that seat.

This experience reminds me of God’s grace. It’s so good, it almost feels like we don’t deserve it. But that’s the beauty of His love. Our mistakes don’t disqualify us; instead, His love defines us.  When Jesus washed the feet of His disciples (John 13), He stooped low to show them love, even though He knew every single one of them would betray, deny, or abandon Him. That’s grace in action—a reminder that love doesn’t wait for perfection or performance.

Our mistakes don’t disqualify us; instead, His love defines us

Your mistakes don’t have the final say. God’s love does. He crowns the humble with victory, not because we’ve earned it but because He delights in us. This year, let’s refuse to let our mistakes define us and instead walk confidently in the truth that we are defined by the One who loves us. Remember, you’re not in coach anymore—grace has brought you to first class!

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?

There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” “How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked. Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things? I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony. But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Man has come down from heaven. And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.” John 3:1-21

What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless? Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road. Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works. James 2:14-26
