The Megaphone Myth – Getting Loud Won’t Make You Right

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” – Proverbs 15:1
Post by Eric Maloney
I’ll never forget the night I learned my brother Garrett was gone. At only 19, Garrett was a talented musician who brought light to everyone he met, even as he quietly dealt with drugs and dangerous associations in a community plagued by an epidemic. One evening, while delivering pizzas, a disagreement over a small debt turned into tragedy. When the Sheriff came to our door with the news four days later, anger surged inside me—an overwhelming urge to shout for justice. Have you ever felt that burning need to be loud when everything seems to be falling apart?
In that raw moment, my mind was clouded by grief and anger—I wasn’t thinking about Scripture or recalling any verses. Yet, looking back now, I can clearly see how Proverbs 15:1 speaks to that experience. “A gentle answer turns away wrath” perfectly captures what I eventually learned: that raising my voice wouldn’t bring Garrett back or heal our broken hearts. Instead, in the quiet aftermath, I discovered that true strength comes from choosing faith and calm over fury.

In the years that followed, my family channeled our grief into hope. We partnered with local organizations and hosted Battle of the Bands competitions in Garrett’s honor while trying to raise awareness. Through that, we witnessed an overwhelming outpouring of kindness from strangers, both local and nationally. This journey taught me that even in the face of immense loss, a gentle, faith-filled response can transform pain into a powerful testimony of love. So when you face loss or anger, how might embracing that gentle strength change the outcome?
Remember, sometimes the most powerful response isn’t the loudest—it’s the quiet, steadfast voice of faith that turns tragedy into hope.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?

“I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith. For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. This is because they have never known the Father or me. Yes, I’m telling you these things now, so that when they happen, you will remember my warning. I didn’t tell you earlier because I was going to be with you for a while longer. “But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged. “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’ John 16:1-15
This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes. I am writing to God’s church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus. Through him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinthians 1:1-9
