“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19)

My Grandpa loved to fish.  I remember he took me and my older brother with him on his boat one time when we were around ten and twelve years old.  I learned “a ton” from an expert fisherman that day.  First, fish must like to bite really early because I think we were on the water before 6 am.  Secondly,  I didn’t realize that fish could hear us until about the third time he told me to quit talking.  Looking back, maybe fish can’t hear, he was just tired of hearing two dumb kids argue.  I also learned that when the fish are biting you don’t stop…even for lunch!  I remember we finally stopped around 1 pm to eat lunch.  As a kid, lunch to me, meant to dock the boat, go to McDonalds and then maybe head home.  To my Grandpa it meant to take a quick 5 minute break to eat a can of potted meat with crackers.   No time to even wash our hands.  Sadly at the time, it felt so boring on that trip, but I wish I could do it one more time now.  Well, all of it except eating the potted meat on crackers without washing our hands.

In the same way, when Jesus called His first disciples, they had no idea what lay ahead. They were just ordinary fishermen when Jesus invited them to join Him on an epic adventure: “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” The disciples had a choice to make: stay in the safe harbor of familiarity or set sail with Jesus into uncharted waters. Choosing to follow Jesus set them on a whole new course as disciples who would learn from Him, be changed by Him, and eventually be sent out by Him.  As we begin this journey of living the Epic Life that Jesus invites us into, we have a choice to make too. Will we stay safely on the shore or set sail with Him on the grand adventure of discipleship? Jesus promises that if we follow Him, He will guide us every step of the way.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
