When Panic Feels Like the Only Option

Read The Daily:
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” – Philippians 4:6

Have you ever noticed how quickly our brains can turn a small bump in the road into a full-blown disaster movie? You get one email at work, and suddenly you’re mentally packing up your desk. The car makes a weird noise, and you’re already imagining yourself stranded on the side of the highway in a thunderstorm. Sometimes, we don’t just go to the extreme—we set up camp there.

That’s exactly what happened to the king in 2 Kings 5. He gets a letter asking for help with a man’s illness—along with more gold, silver, and nice clothes than most people will ever see. Instead of asking questions or seeking solutions, he flips out. He assumes it’s all a setup, tears his clothes in outrage, and jumps straight to the worst-case scenario. His fear of being powerless drove him to overreact before he even knew the whole story. Sound familiar?

But here’s the thing: feeling powerless doesn’t have to push us into panic mode. Philippians 4:6 reminds us there’s another option—one that doesn’t require all the answers or the illusion of control. When we pray, we’re doing more than reciting words; we’re handing over the weight of “fixing it” to the One who actually can. And when we take a moment to thank Him for what He’s already done, it’s like putting on perspective glasses—we start to see the moment in light of God’s track record, not our fears.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?

On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him. Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come home with him. His only daughter, who was about twelve years old, was dying. As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds. A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure. Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.” But Jesus said, “Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.” Luke 8:40-46

This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace. All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls. This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward. They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen. 1 Peter 1:1-12
