Read The New Testament In A Year
One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: âTeacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?â Jesus replied, âWhat does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?â The man answered, ââYou must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.â And, âLove your neighbor as yourself.ââ âRight!â Jesus told him. âDo this and you will live!â The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, âAnd who is my neighbor?â Jesus replied with a story: âA Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. âBy chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. âThen a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, âTake care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, Iâll pay you the next time Iâm here.â âNow which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?â Jesus asked. The man replied, âThe one who showed him mercy.â Then Jesus said, âYes, now go and do the same.â As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lordâs feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, âLord, doesnât it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.â But the Lord said to her, âMy dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.â Luke 10:25-42
So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. You wonât spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoyâtheir immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols. Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead. That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now deadâso although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit. The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. 1 Peter 4:1-11
