Chasing What You Already Have
Read The Daily:
“Whoever loves money will never have enough. Whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.” – Ecclesiastes 5:10
Ever notice how “enough” always seems just out of reach? You get the raise, and suddenly you need more. You land the relationship, but now you’re scrolling to see if someone else has it better. It’s like happiness is always one purchase, one compliment, or one opportunity away.
That’s exactly where Gehazi found himself. His mentor, Elisha, had just refused Naaman’s gifts as a way of showing that God’s healing couldn’t be bought. But Gehazi couldn’t let it go. He ran after what he thought he needed, only to lose what mattered most. Greed doesn’t just empty your bank account—it drains your soul. When you chase “more,” you forget what you already have.
Here’s the truth: comparison and envy are never satisfied. There’s always someone with a bigger house, a better body, a higher-paying job. But grace calls us back to contentment. It reminds us that real peace doesn’t come from stacking possessions—it comes from knowing who you are and whose you are.
So today, take inventory. Not of what you’re missing, but of what you’ve already been given—friends, breath in your lungs, a God who hasn’t given up on you. Gratitude is what turns “not enough” into more than enough.

Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus said, “This is how you should pray: “Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. Give us each day the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation.” Then, teaching them more about prayer, he used this story: “Suppose you went to a friend’s house at midnight, wanting to borrow three loaves of bread. You say to him, ‘A friend of mine has just arrived for a visit, and I have nothing for him to eat.’ And suppose he calls out from his bedroom, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is locked for the night, and my family and I are all in bed. I can’t help you.’ But I tell you this—though he won’t do it for friendship’s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence. “And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. “You fathers—if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” Luke 11:1-13
Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you. If you suffer, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs. But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name! For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News? And also, “If the righteous are barely saved, what will happen to godless sinners?” So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you. 1 Peter 4:12-19
