“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
We took a trip one summer when I was probably around ten or so to see my uncle who lived on a Naval Base in Pensacola, Florida. I remember sitting in-between my parents and constantly looking at the map. Trying to see where we were and how much longer we had before arriving. I was always fixated on thinking “Are we there yet?” I couldn’t wait to reach the final destination. What I didn’t realize was the journey itself has usually created just as many great memories. While the destination provided a fun finale, the journey held the real treasure.
As Jesus wraps up His ministry on earth, He casts vision for the journey ahead when He tells the disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations.” He makes it clear their destination is huge – global disciple making! But the journey will be what shapes them. As they go, baptizing, teaching, and guiding others in how to live and love like He did, the disciples themselves will grow in unprecedented ways.
We need to maintain this same expansive vision of disciple making globally. Our final destination as believers is to spread the Gospel to every nation and help others follow Jesus. But the journey is what will change our own lives. As we embrace the process of being discipled and discipling others, we’ll grow to learn more and more our true identity as God’s children. Let’s keep the end goal in sight but cherish each step in between. The journey of discipleship leads to the greatest transformation!
