“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” (Isaiah 61:1)
Yesterday we looked at the 1st R (Reach) of the Jesus’ strategy. Today is the second R which is Restore.
Let me give you the story of the world according to God and why it’s good news. 1) God created everything and it was perfect and good. 2) Humans with free choice broke perfection with our own brokenness. 3) Jesus came to live the perfect life and restore humanity and restores us to help restore others. 4) One day, everything gets restored to God’s perfect original creation.
I’ve had so many highlights over the years of being a leader in the local church, but my favorites are always seeing Jesus restore people’s lives from brokenness. I could go on and on about one lady I know who lived hopelessly with addiction to now thriving and showing others the hope she has. I could tell you about the couple that promised me they were getting divorced because they didn’t even like each other anymore to now having an amazing marriage. Or the depressed and anxiety ridden friend that now gets out of bed each day excited about what God is doing all around him. I could go on, but seeing a life restored is what gets me out of bed too!
Jesus came to restore broken lives and reconcile us to God. He longs to bind up the brokenhearted around us and set captives free from sin, shame, and false identity. We join Jesus in this mission when we identify sources of suffering and share the good news of the gospel both in word and action. Who needs to hear about God’s transforming grace from you? That’s actually some really good news!
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
