Lose the Costume
Read The Daily:
“People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7
Most of us learn early how to “look right.” Different environments require different costumes — the version of you that seems safest. Work-You is polished. Family-You has opinions. Social-Media-You is basically your highlight reel with better lighting. And church-You? Well, that version tends to smile a lot and pretend nothing’s on fire. But God isn’t impressed by any costume we wear — not the strong one, not the religious one, not the perfectly-curated one.
Jesus once described two men who prayed. One read his spiritual résumé out loud like God needed an update. The other simply said, “Have mercy on me.” No filters. No performance. No pretending. The shock wasn’t that God heard the messy prayer — it’s that He preferred it. Because honesty is the language of grace. God can work with the real you, not the costume version.
If you’ve ever felt like you have to keep it together for God, hear this: you don’t. You don’t need big churchy words or a clean story. “God, I need help” counts. “God, I’m tired” counts. “God, I’m not okay” might be the truest prayer you ever pray. He already knows what’s underneath the costume, and He isn’t running away.
So today, try something radical: be real. Even with God. Especially with God. Whisper the honest prayer under the surface. Take off the costume and let grace breathe a little. You might find that God wasn’t waiting for you to get it together — just to open the door.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?

Read The New Testament In A Year
As Paul and Barnabas left the synagogue that day, the people begged them to speak about these things again the next week. Many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, and the two men urged them to continue to rely on the grace of God. The following week almost the entire city turned out to hear them preach the word of the Lord. But when some of the Jews saw the crowds, they were jealous; so they slandered Paul and argued against whatever he said. Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared, “It was necessary that we first preach the word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles. For the Lord gave us this command when he said, ‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.’” When the Gentiles heard this, they were very glad and thanked the Lord for his message; and all who were chosen for eternal life became believers. So the Lord’s message spread throughout that region. Then the Jews stirred up the influential religious women and the leaders of the city, and they incited a mob against Paul and Barnabas and ran them out of town. So they shook the dust from their feet as a sign of rejection and went to the town of Iconium. And the believers were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. Acts 13:42-52
“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open: “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. Look, I will force those who belong to Satan’s synagogue—those liars who say they are Jews but are not—to come and bow down at your feet. They will acknowledge that you are the ones I love. “Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take away your crown. All who are victorious will become pillars in the Temple of my God, and they will never have to leave it. And I will write on them the name of my God, and they will be citizens in the city of my God—the new Jerusalem that comes down from heaven from my God. And I will also write on them my new name. “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Revelation 3:7-13
