I Do, You Help
I was fortunate to play and then later coach football with one of the coaching legends of Ohio. Over the years, you start to notice some really smart things that great coaches do. For example, every single drill we did in practice mimicked some larger action we would do in the game. A typical practice was broken down into Individual periods, group periods then finally a team period where it all came together. You would start doing simple basic tasks and drills with intense coaching (many times coaches doing the drill first) to progressing to a team period where there was less coaching and demonstration to you actually doing it yourself. Great coaches should probably acknowledge that the best plans are actually copied from Jesus’ leadership example.
After the disciples had observed Jesus’ ministry, He began giving them minor responsibilities with His support. He sent them out to preach in pairs, so they could encourage each other. When He fed the five thousand, Jesus had the disciples distribute the bread and fish. Like a coach, He let them work in smaller tasks or help Him with larger tasks. Jesus knew that helping creates confidence. The disciples grew as they assisted Jesus while He still led the majority of the ministry. We see this principle in coaching and parenting as well; kids gain confidence when parents let them “help” with simple chores. Help precedes solo leadership.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
