You Do, I Help
My son and I repaired several sections of our fence this past summer. I’m sure my wife thinks I’m too hard on him with projects like that. However, I have to remind her that I had to hold a flashlight for my dad as a kid, so my son has a cake walk. I learned quickly as a kid that you could get yelled at and/or cussed by simply holding a flashlight in the wrong place. When we started with the first section of fence, I took over and was obviously going to do it right and quickly. That’s when I noticed my wife giving me “the look”. Basically she was reminding me that it was good for my son to not just be my “holder of tools”. So I let him take complete charge for the remaining sections of fence. I would let him do whatever he wanted and then just suggest a better place to insert a screw or how to measure the next section. He actually did it just as quick and it’s also still standing. It was a good reminder of his progress the last 18 years. He started off watching me do stuff as a little kid, then as a teenager would help me do it. Now a few weeks before leaving for college, he’s actually doing it with a little assistance from me.
In a similar way, Jesus sent His disciples out on short term missions to do the work (Mark 6:7-13). He knew they were ready for hands-on leadership experience with His support and coaching. The disciples grew as they did the work themselves, no longer just assisting Jesus. It’s an important leadership principle – we need to coach people through leading, not just tell them what to do. Jesus walked beside the disciples, guiding them step-by-step until they gained the confidence to invest in others on their own.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
