Grace Isn’t an Excuse, It’s an Engine

Read The Daily:
“Now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.” — Romans 6:22

Let’s be honest — when most people hear about grace, their first thought is “So I can do whatever I want?” It’s like finding out your parents aren’t home and immediately thinking about throwing a party. The message this week tackled this head-on. Yeah, grace means you’re not earning points or following rules to stay in God’s good books. But that doesn’t mean nothing matters. It means everything matters differently. Grace isn’t a hall pass to check out of life. It’s the fuel to finally live the way you actually want to deep down.

Think about someone you know who’s genuinely free — not reckless, but free. They’re usually the ones making the biggest impact, taking the biggest risks for good, showing up for people without keeping track. Why? Because they’re not wasting energy on managing their image or earning approval. They’ve got all that energy freed up to actually do something with their life. That’s what Paul’s getting at. When you’re not exhausted from trying to be good enough, you’ve got fuel in the tank to be good for something.

Here’s what’s crazy — the things you actually want when you’re healthy are usually the things God wants for you too. Connection instead of isolation. Purpose instead of numbing out. Creating instead of destroying. When you’re not driven by shame or fear, you naturally move toward life. Grace doesn’t make you want to sin more; it makes sin look boring. It’s like finally eating real food after years of junk — you realize what you were settling for wasn’t even that good.

So what would you do if you really believed you were free? Not free to waste your life, but free to use it? Maybe you’d have that hard conversation you’ve been avoiding. Maybe you’d finally start that thing you’ve been dreaming about. Maybe you’d stop apologizing for existing and start showing up fully. Grace isn’t about lowering the bar — it’s about removing the ceiling. You’re not free from responsibility. You’re free for purpose. There’s a difference, and it changes everything.

Read The New Testament In A Year

Sitting across from the offering box, he was observing how the crowd tossed money in for the collection. Many of the rich were making large contributions. One poor widow came up and put in two small coins—a measly two cents. Jesus called his disciples over and said, “The truth is that this poor widow gave more to the collection than all the others put together. All the others gave what they’ll never miss; she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford—she gave her all.” As he walked away from the Temple, one of his disciples said, “Teacher, look at that stonework! Those buildings!” Jesus said, “You’re impressed by this grandiose architecture? There’s not a stone in the whole works that is not going to end up in a heap of rubble.” Later, as he was sitting on Mount Olives in full view of the Temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew got him off by himself and asked, “Tell us, when is this going to happen? What sign will we get that things are coming to a head?” Jesus began, “Watch out for doomsday deceivers. Many leaders are going to show up with forged identities claiming, ‘I’m the One.’ They will deceive a lot of people. When you hear of wars and rumored wars, keep your head and don’t panic. This is routine history, and no sign of the end. Nation will fight nation and ruler fight ruler, over and over. Earthquakes will occur in various places. There will be famines. But these things are nothing compared to what’s coming. “And watch out! They’re going to drag you into court. And then it will go from bad to worse, dog-eat-dog, everyone at your throat because you carry my name. You’re placed there as sentinels to truth. The Message has to be preached all across the world.Mark 12:41-44, 13:1-10

Don’t run roughshod over the concerns of your brothers and sisters. Their concerns are God’s concerns, and he will take care of them. We’ve warned you about this before. God hasn’t invited us into a disorderly, grungy life but into something holy and beautiful—as beautiful on the inside as the outside. If you disregard this advice, you’re not offending your neighbors; you’re rejecting God, who is making you a gift of his Holy Spirit. Regarding life together and getting along with each other, you don’t need me to tell you what to do. You’re God-taught in these matters. Just love one another! You’re already good at it; your friends all over the province of Macedonia are the evidence. Keep it up; get better and better at it. Stay calm; mind your own business; do your own job. You’ve heard all this from us before, but a reminder never hurts. We want you living in a way that will command the respect of outsiders, not lying around sponging off your friends. And regarding the question, friends, that has come up about what happens to those already dead and buried, we don’t want you in the dark any longer. First off, you must not carry on over them like people who have nothing to look forward to, as if the grave were the last word. Since Jesus died and broke loose from the grave, God will most certainly bring back to life those who died in Jesus. And then this: We can tell you with complete confidence—we have the Master’s word on it—that when the Master comes again to get us, those of us who are still alive will not get a jump on the dead and leave them behind. In actual fact, they’ll be ahead of us. The Master himself will give the command. Archangel thunder! God’s trumpet blast! He’ll come down from heaven and the dead in Christ will rise—they’ll go first. Then the rest of us who are still alive at the time will be caught up with them into the clouds to meet the Master. Oh, we’ll be walking on air! And then there will be one huge family reunion with the Master. So reassure one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:6-18
