The Umpire’s Blown Call

“You know that feeling, right? The one where you’re replaying that one moment over and over in your head. Like that baseball umpire, Jim Joyce, who made that blown call in 2010. He kept watching it, that ground ball, the runner sliding in, and that split-second where he saw ‘safe’ instead of ‘out.’
It’s like he was stuck in the stadium replay booth, watching it on repeat. The announcers, the coaches, the crowd – everyone knew. But his call stood. And that weight… you start thinking, ‘How could I have missed that? How do I live with this?’ It gnaws at you, doesn’t it?
Maybe it wasn’t a blown call in a game, but that word you said, that decision you made, that thing you *didn’t* do. It plays on repeat. The world doesn’t offer a redo, but maybe… maybe it wasn’t the moment itself that broke you, but the meaning you attached to it.
My sin is ever before me. You still feel it… but it doesn’t get to name you.”

“Right now I am storm-tossed. And what am I going to say? ‘Father, get me out of this’? No, this is why I came in the first place. I’ll say, ‘Father, put your glory on display.'” A voice came out of the sky: “I have glorified it, and I’ll glorify it again.” The listening crowd said, “Thunder!” Others said, “An angel spoke to him!” Jesus said, “The voice didn’t come for me but for you. At this moment the world is in crisis. Now Satan, the ruler of this world, will be thrown out. And I, as I am lifted up from the earth, will attract everyone to me and gather them around me.” He put it this way to show how he was going to be put to death. Voices from the crowd answered, “We heard from God’s Law that the Messiah lasts forever. How can it be necessary, as you put it, that the Son of Man ‘be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?” Jesus said, “For a brief time still, the light is among you. Walk by the light you have so darkness doesn’t destroy you. If you walk in darkness, you don’t know where you’re going. As you have the light, believe in the light. Then the light will be within you, and shining through your lives. You’ll be children of light.” Jesus said all this, and then went into hiding. All these God-signs he had given them and they still didn’t get it, still wouldn’t trust him. This proved that the prophet Isaiah was right: God, who believed what we preached? Who recognized God’s arm, outstretched and ready to act? John 12:27-38
I, Paul, have been called and sent by Jesus, the Messiah, according to God’s plan, along with my friend Sosthenes. I send this letter to you in God’s church at Corinth, Christians cleaned up by Jesus and set apart for a God-filled life. I include in my greeting all who call out to Jesus, wherever they live. He’s their Master as well as ours! May all the gifts and benefits that come from God our Father, and the Master, Jesus Christ, be yours. Every time I think of you–and I think of you often!–I thank God for your lives of free and open access to God, given by Jesus. There’s no end to what has happened in you–it’s beyond speech, beyond knowledge. The evidence of Christ has been clearly verified in your lives. Just think–you don’t need a thing, you’ve got it all! All God’s gifts are right in front of you as you wait expectantly for our Master Jesus to arrive on the scene for the Finale. And not only that, but God himself is right alongside to keep you steady and on track until things are all wrapped up by Jesus. God, who got you started in this spiritual adventure, shares with us the life of his Son and our Master Jesus. He will never give up on you. Never forget that. I have a serious concern to bring up with you, my friends, using the authority of Jesus, our Master. I’ll put it as urgently as I can: You must get along with each other. You must learn to be considerate of one another, cultivating a life in common. I bring this up because some from Chloe’s family brought a most disturbing report to my attention–that you’re fighting among yourselves! 1 Corinthians 1:1-11
