Take a Moment
Ask God what He wants to show you before reading today
Read The Daily
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19)
Years ago, we decided we would do a Thanksgiving basket giveaway to a neighborhood that seemed to be struggling. The plan was to buy the groceries needed for 50 full thanksgiving meals and then unexpectedly show up in this neighborhood to knock on the door and bless them with the meal. I had several people nervous to knock on doors so I told them all to watch me the first time. I acted confident but then realized while knocking, that I also had no clue what to say when they opened. Due to my lack of preparation, a lady opened the door and just looked at me. I nervously said, “Hi, I’m Trent and our church wants to give you all the groceries for a free thanksgiving basket”. She replied, “No you don’t! No way!” I wasn’t sure how to respond so I stood there while she went back into another room asking her friend to join her. Now I am even confused as to what’s going on. Her friend comes back with her to the door and she says, “tell her what you just told me!” So I repeat my clever “Hi, I’m Trent and our church wanted to give you these groceries for a full Thanksgiving meal”. This lady just starts crying. Now I think I’m being pranked.
One of the ladies says that they were running low on food and she didn’t know what to do. So her roommate said why don’t we pray and ask for help. The other thought it was a dumb idea since neither one had really ever prayed before. But with no options, they got on their knees and prayed in the living room for God to help them with food. She said as soon as we said “Amen” our doorbell sounded and you’re standing there with a bag full of groceries. Not all stories end like that but it’s a reminder of the small role we get to play in helping others see Jesus.
God designed you for a greater purpose than just yourself. When a team united by trying to live and love like Jesus focuses that same passion on care for others—fireworks happen! Hearts change, energy gets unleashed, laughter and joy result. Ask God to guide your crew towards one act of service and blessing this week. Who knows, it might become a holy habit!
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
