“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)
I’m not the smartest person in the world, but I have been fortunate to have great parents, pastors and mentors that taught me the secret of the road. As I get older, I’m amazed at how many smart people (way smarter than me) don’t get this principle. I don’t care how much you try, or want or intend, if you’re on a road, it will ultimately take you wherever the road is headed. For example, let’s say I want to have a great family and it’s the most important thing to me, but my road is to work as much as possible. That road will lead to having as much money as possible but not the best family possible. Or this one: I want to get old and enjoy my grandkids but the road I’m on is not moving, eating horrible and never exercising. The road simply takes you where it’s headed.
That’s why it’s wise to periodically take time to step back and evaluate your core paths in life. Check your trajectory: are you headed towards your ultimate goals and priorities? Or are you veering off course? We all have areas like career, finances, marriage, parenting, spiritual growth, health, where we hope to end up someday. But sometimes we get so focused on day-to-day demands, we fail to look at the bigger picture. It’s easy to numb out through screens, social media, entertainment, or other escapes. But when we neglect intentionality about our life direction, we drift into default modes that may not align with our values and purpose.
That’s why self-reflection is so critical. Consider asking yourself questions like: Are my daily habits cultivating depth in my marriage, or distraction and busyness? Am I regularly making wise financial decisions that move me towards stability? Do I carve out time to be refreshed spiritually, or is faith getting squeezed out? What activities am I prioritizing that don’t really align with who I want to become?
Don’t wait until a crisis forces you to correct course. Through prayer and wise counsel, evaluate whether your path matches your aspirations. Where necessary, make small but intentional pivots. It’s never too late to get headed in a better direction. Stay humble and open to God’s guidance – He promises to make your paths straight when you trust Him. You have the power each day to choose small steps that ultimately take you where you want to go.
Prayer for the Day
God what are you showing me? What am I going to do about it?
God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
