The Diesel Mower Mishap

Read The Daily:
May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to fully understand. Ephesians 3:19

So, I thought I’d do something really good one Friday. I decided to cut the grass at C3. I went to the big mower, got ready to start it, and… nothing. Turns out, it was empty. Okay, no big deal, I’ll get gas. I fill up a gas can, bring it back, fill the mower tank, feeling pretty good about myself. Then, right before I turn the key, it hits me: ‘Is this mower diesel?’ Yep. It was diesel. I had just put gasoline in a diesel engine.

I had to drain the whole thing, watch YouTube videos on how to disconnect the fuel line, and then go get diesel. It was a whole ordeal. The point is, I knew I couldn’t put the wrong fuel in something and expect it to run. It’s not designed for that. This whole experience made me think about how often we try to run our lives on the wrong fuel. We try to power our days with things that just aren’t designed to sustain us, and then we wonder why we sputter and stall.

Paul’s prayer is that we would experience the love of Christ, a love that’s too great to fully understand. This isn’t about a quick fix or a temporary boost. It’s about connecting to the ultimate fuel source. When we try to run on things like money, the need to be right, or the need to impress people, we’re essentially putting gasoline in a diesel engine. It just won’t work long-term. God’s love, however, is the fuel we were designed for. It’s an unlimited supply, and it’s the only thing that can truly power us through.

Read The New Testament In A Year

Some who have taken their stand right here are going to see it happen, see with their own eyes the kingdom of God.” About eight days after saying this, he climbed the mountain to pray, taking Peter, John, and James along. While he was in prayer, the appearance of his face changed and his clothes became blinding white. At once two men were there talking with him. They turned out to be Moses and Elijah– and what a glorious appearance they made! They talked over his exodus, the one Jesus was about to complete in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, Peter and those with him were slumped over in sleep. When they came to, rubbing their eyes, they saw Jesus in his glory and the two men standing with him. When Moses and Elijah had left, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, this is a great moment! Let’s build three memorials: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He blurted this out without thinking. While he was babbling on like this, a light-radiant cloud enveloped them. As they found themselves buried in the cloud, they became deeply aware of God. Then there was a voice out of the cloud: “This is my Son, the Chosen! Listen to him.” When the sound of the voice died away, they saw Jesus there alone. They were speechless. And they continued speechless, said not one thing to anyone during those days of what they had seen. When they came down off the mountain the next day, a big crowd was there to meet them. A man called from out of the crowd, “Please, please, Teacher, take a look at my son. He’s my only child. Luke 9:27-38

What they did to Jesus, they do to us–trial and torture, mockery and murder; what Jesus did among them, he does in us–he lives! Our lives are at constant risk for Jesus’ sake, which makes Jesus’ life all the more evident in us. While we’re going through the worst, you’re getting in on the best! We’re not keeping this quiet, not on your life. Just like the psalmist who wrote, “I believed it, so I said it,” we say what we believe. And what we believe is that the One who raised up the Master Jesus will just as certainly raise us up with you, alive. Every detail works to your advantage and to God’s glory: more and more grace, more and more people, more and more praise! So we’re not giving up. How could we! Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us, on the inside, where God is making new life, not a day goes by without his unfolding grace. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good times, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever. 2 Corinthians 4:10-18
