Temptation Is Based On A Lost Identity

VIEW/PRINT WEEKLY GUIDE

After Jesus was baptized, God affirmed his identity saying “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Immediately after, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted (Matthew 3:16-4:1).

The enemy directly attacked Jesus’ identity by questioning, “If you are the Son of God…” In the same way, our core temptations stem from believing lies about ourselves rather than trusting God’s word. The main temptations Jesus faced were appetite, approval, and ambition – which connect to our desires for control, comfort, power, and affirmation.

We are a Family of Servants on Mission that helps others live like Jesus.

When we are tempted, we can combat lies with God’s truths:

Control – I want to be in charge and feel certain about life.
God is GREAT – I can trust His sovereign plan even when life feels out of control. Pray Psalm 27:1, believing God is in control.

Comfort – I want an easy life free of demands and stress.
God is GOOD – He truly satisfies, so I don’t need to pamper myself or escape through indulgence. Pray Psalm 63:1, finding joy in God.

Power – I want to succeed, influence others, and be respected.
God is GLORIOUS – All power and victory come from Him, not my status. Pray Psalm 62:11, focusing on God’s glory versus others’ opinions.

Affirmation – I want people’s approval and fear rejection.
God is GRACIOUS – I don’t need to prove myself or earn love from others. Pray Psalm 103:2-4, receiving God’s unconditional grace.

The gospel reminds us we are loved children of God. Our identity and worth come from Jesus, not our works. May we reject temptation’s lies and walk in the freeing truth of being God’s beloved sons and daughters.
