“He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.” (Proverbs 28:26)

“It’s direction, not intention, that determines destination.”

I ruined our family vacation this past summer.  We were supposed to take our kids and their boyfriends and girlfriends on a cruise and were sailing out of Port Canaveral.  We only had around 20 hours total to get to our 14 hour destination.  I gassed up the car and had a plan to drive about 15 mph above the speed limit.  I had every stop, bathroom break and gas station mapped out and was well rested to physically drive all the way through.  So what was my mistake?  As soon as we took off, I started heading north towards Columbus.  After Columbus, then Pennsylvania all the way to Canada.  My wife and kids were yelling for 12 hours, “you’re driving the wrong direction!” but I knew I was making good time so I wasn’t stopping for anyone.

Ok..that’s obviously stupid and I should be locked up if it was true for being a moron.  But sadly, I like you do this in life all the time.  I act like my current direction is going to have nothing to do with my final destination.  I want to lose weight but I’m still going to eat fast food 5 times a week.  I would like my marriage to get better but I don’t want to change how I act towards my wife.  I really want a quick fix and not a change of direction.  In life, we often end up somewhere far from our intentions. We meant to stay close to family, excel in a career, or keep physically fit. But despite good goals, we discover we’ve landed in a place we never wanted to be.

Why does this happen? Because intention alone (or even effort) is not enough to determine destination. The path we actually take is what sets our course, not what we aim for. Our daily direction overrides intentions.

If you don’t like where your path is leading, take comfort that you can still change routes. Ask God to help you recognize any misalignment between your intentions and direction. Then allow Him to gently correct your trajectory so your steps align with His purposes.

Prayer for the Day

God what are you  showing me?  What am I going to do about it?

God help me to see one person that I can serve through a kind word, random act of kindness, or simple gift today?
